We cancel out all the things you’ve paid for with all the times other people have paid for things on your behalf, and times you’ve been paid back. The remainder is your house balance and we’ll show you the fewest, simplest number of payments that you could make to be all squared with the house.

If you want to remove someone (including yourself) from a house, you can do it by accessing the “Settings > Remove someone” option in the app.

Before that person can be removed, you have to make sure of the following:

  • there must not be any upcoming costs or bills in the house that the person has a share of – otherwise when the cost is due they will no longer be in the house to see it! You can edit or delete those upcoming cost to make sure that person is removed.
  • the person must have a house balance of zero – you can’t remove them from the house if they still owe money or are owed money, otherwise everyone else’s balances won’t make sense. Before removing them, make sure everything is settled up and recorded (or paid for) in the app so their balance is zero.

When a bill is due, we automatically try to collect everyone’s share from the payment method they registered with acasa. If someone doesn’t pay (either because they didn’t sign up to acasa yet, or their payment method is invalid), then we’ll send the whole house an email explaining who we weren’t able to collect money from and why.

We’ll try to collect after 2 days, and again a few days later. If our repeated attempts fail, we may collect the remaining money from anyone in the house who has an active payment method. If this happens, we’ll keep track of it in the acasa app so you can easily see whether somebody overpaid or underpaid relative to their share of a bill and see that reflected on your overall house balances.

We provide plenty of notice and inform all tenants, both via email and in the app, before taking any payments to cover outstanding balances. This “joint and several liability” billing is part of our Bills Included T&Cs.

Not set up with Bills Included?

Important: If you’ve set up your services directly with suppliers (including through click-out links in the acasa app) and shared your payment details with them, then you’ll pay those suppliers directly (and can track them in acasa with these steps). This article only applies when you book and pay for a “Bills Included” option directly within the acasa app or website.

Bills Included Payments

With our Bills Included packages (in which you pay your bills through acasa), the acasa app will automatically collect payment from you (and other housemates) each month. You are able to proactively pay any part of the bill (eg. your own share, or extra to cover someone else) if you wish.

That tenant can add a recurring payment into acasa to reflect the charges they incur. Other housemates will then be able to see how much they owe.

If different tenants take responsibility for different bills each, the balances will cancel out to show what each tenant owes the others.

In short, no – unlike energy or broadband, you can’t choose your supplier for water; that’s predetermined when your property is built (based on the area you’re in) and isn’t something that you can change.

Bills Included

When you choose a Bills Included package with acasa, we’ll set up a water (and sewerage) account with your local water company (or companies, if there are two involved at your property), and we’ll process your payments and make sure your billing is up to date.

This means there’s no hassle or stress, and – unlike can happen when paying directly – you’ll automatically spread out the cost over the whole tenancy instead of paying everything up front.

Direct with the Water Company

If you’re paying directly with a water company, you’ll need to pay on receipt of bill; either a fixed amount or a variable amount depending on your usage.

Confused about your water bill? acasa can set up, split and settle up your water bills from the start to end of your tenancy – we collect payments from all housemates and transfer the money to the water company. Enter your postcode to get started.

Your landlord or agent should know whether you have a water meter, where it’s located and should give you up-to-date readings when you move in so that you’re not paying for the previous tenant’s usage! If you’re having a nose around, it’s normally found in one of the following places:

  1. Outside – in a meter box attached to an outside wall
  2. Outside – under a cover in the pavement
  3. Inside – under the sink
  4. Inside – in a utility cupboard or basement

It will have a meter serial number and a dial of numbers with “m3” to the right. When you give the reading, take the numbers from the left including the zeros, and ignore anything in red.
