This page covers our Bills Included packages. If you’re not paying for your services through acasa, you don’t need to upload any meter readings to us. If you’re paying the suppliers yourselves, you may still find our instructions below useful for finding and reading the meter, but you won’t need to tell us the readings!

Please be aware that with Bills Included packages, the amount you pay does not change month-to-month based on your usage; providing readings helps us open your account with the right reading and going forwards allows us to track usage against the fair usage limits.

It’s really helpful if you can provide at least a meter reading around the date you move in and/or the date you start your services with acasa.

Finding the meter in your home

There’s no one place to find the meter, but here are some common places to look!

  • Near the door, in a small boxed in area or cupboard.
  • Under the stairs or in the basement
  • In a communal cupboard or area (in a block of flats).
  • In the basement
  • Outside your home, near the street (gas and water only; electricity will be in a dry place!)
  • No gas meter? Do you have a (gas) boiler for hot water, or use gas for cooking? If not, you probably don’t have a gas supply at all.
  • No water meter? No problem – many homes don’t have one, and instead are charged a fixed rate regardless of how much water is used.

If you can’t find your meter after looking around, you could ask your landlord or even a neighbour who might help.

Reading your utility meter

Our friends at Octopus Energy have a great article about how to read the numbers off your meter. The key thing is to ignore any red numbers or decimal points in the reading you give us.

Submitting the meter reading to us

There are a few ways to submit meter readings;

  • Through the acasa app (for iOS or Android); go to “Manage Services” and you’ll see your utility meters.
  • Through our website – click ‘acasa Services’ then ‘Meter Readings’.
  • Directly to the supplier. You can send meter readings directly to your supplier.

If you have any problems or questions finding your meters or sharing your readings, you can always get in touch via in-app chat or using the links at the bottom of this page! 🙂

Confused about your water bill? acasa can set up, split and settle up your water bills from the start to end of your tenancy – we collect payments from all housemates and transfer the money to the water company. Enter your postcode to get started.

Your landlord or agent should know whether you have a water meter, where it’s located and should give you up-to-date readings when you move in so that you’re not paying for the previous tenant’s usage! If you’re having a nose around, it’s normally found in one of the following places:

  1. Outside – in a meter box attached to an outside wall
  2. Outside – under a cover in the pavement
  3. Inside – under the sink
  4. Inside – in a utility cupboard or basement

It will have a meter serial number and a dial of numbers with “m3” to the right. When you give the reading, take the numbers from the left including the zeros, and ignore anything in red.

In short, no – unlike energy or broadband, you can’t choose your supplier for water; that’s predetermined when your property is built (based on the area you’re in) and isn’t something that you can change.

Bills Included

When you choose a Bills Included package with acasa, we’ll set up a water (and sewerage) account with your local water company (or companies, if there are two involved at your property), and we’ll process your payments and make sure your billing is up to date.

This means there’s no hassle or stress, and – unlike can happen when paying directly – you’ll automatically spread out the cost over the whole tenancy instead of paying everything up front.

Direct with the Water Company

If you’re paying directly with a water company, you’ll need to pay on receipt of bill; either a fixed amount or a variable amount depending on your usage.

Most meters are read by the water company themselves twice a year and your water bills will usually be based on actual meter readings.

It’s also possible that you don’t have a water meter at all. In this case, your usage is unlimited and unmeasured and your bill will be fixed at a monthly rate that you can’t control.

Finding your meter

Most meters are on the public footpath/pavement outside your house or in the front garden. Occasionally it is located inside the house next to the stop tap (used to turn off the water supply in your home). For flats, it’s typically in a communal cupboard or can be managed and billed by your leaseholder rather than individual inhabitants.

The meter’s appearance can vary but typically look like the photos you’ll find in a simple web image search.

You will generally find the meter in a small chamber under a metal or plastic cover. Underneath the cover you may see a polystyrene plug which protects your meter against frost and debris. Remember to replace this when you have finished.

Reading your meter

On the meter face, there are two sets of numbers, black on the left and red on the right. Only make a note of the black numbers – ignore the red ones.

Submitting your meter reading to acasa

Note: This only applies if you’re paying your bills directly through acasa with our Bills Included package.

Open the acasa app, and go to the ‘Bills’ page. Simply tap the ‘Meter Readings’ button, and then tap ‘Water’. Remember to only input the black numbers. Then tap ‘Submit’.

And that’s it – we’ll take it from there. Next time we’re checking your water account, we may use your reading to inform how much you’ve been using.

Submitting your meter reading to the water provider

There’s typically no need to inform the water company during your tenancy, but it can be helpful during the move-in process.

You can sometimes provide the reading in an online portal for the water company. Here’s how to find out your water provider.

In the UK, your water supplier cannot be changed or ‘switched’ like your energy supplier can.

The easiest way to find your water supplier is via the acasa app; go to “Services” and then “Water” which should show a link to your current supplier.

You can also find out who the supplier is via this Water UK search tool.

If that tool is not showing your water company, it’s possible your address is too new to have been added to the water companies’ databases yet. In this case you could search for a nearby property’s postcode and contact their water company to check whether they have you in their system.
